English Interview

Tell me a little bit about yourselves. What are your names and positions at work? 

Willson: We’re originally from San José La Máquina, Departament of Suchitepéquez in Guatemala.
Sergio: My work here in the vineyard varies, sometimes I do many things like weeding, pruning, or
thinning.
Willson: My main job is to take care of the irrigation and to keep an eye on the spraying.
Rosbin: My main job is to supervise the vineyard in general, the irrigation system, harvest and to make
sure that everything goes well and that no incidents occur.

​How long have you been doing this work?

Sergio: I have been working in the vineyard for four years, I’ve always worked in agriculture.
Willson: Since 2008 and I have worked for this company since 2014.
Rosbin: I have been working for this company since 2019.

What do you like best about the work? What is hard about the work?

Sergio: Honestly, I like everything about the vineyard work, I enjoy pruning the most. The most difficult thing, apart from the temperatures, is when we are thinning.
​Willson: What I like the most is that every day I get to learn new things, I really like learning. I enjoy it because most of us here are family, so every day we see each other, which is difficult when you work in different places.
Rosbin: Harvest time is fun. I picked fruit for five years and I loved it. I no longer pick fruit, but I enjoy watching how fast the guys work during harvest. What I dislike is the high temperatures during suckering and thinning., I feel like it’s the most difficult season for me because of the heat.

What skills are required to do your job well?

Sergio: Be patient and try to do your best at work. Be quick and efficient.
Willson: The greatest skill one needs is to be willing to learn and follow instructions, because if we want to do things our own way after someone else has already explained it to us, we may make a mistake. For example, when spraying, I can't spray more or less because if the plants get sick, it’s a
serious problem we will have.
Rosbin: To take things day by day. In the vineyard, you never stop learning. Year after year things are different, we always need to keep an open mind.

What is your favorite season in the vineyard?

Sergio: For me the most beautiful season is harvest. You feel an adrenaline rush when you're picking
fruit.
​Willson: Harvest is the best season because that is when we see the results of all the work we have put in throughout the year. Harvest is very exciting for me.
Rosbin: Harvest too. It’s where you can see the work you put in, if you didn't do it right or where we failed, or why previously a ranch produced a certain amount, etc.

Did you have, or have you ever had a mentor at work? Tell us about them.

Sergio: When I first arrived in this country and started working in the vineyard, my brothers were by
my side showing me how to do everything because it was all new to me. But I learned and I’m not
saying I know everything, but I’m now very familiar with vineyard work.
Willson: I had a coworker, Andy Blanco, and he helped a lot because when I started working with irrigation, he trained me. He asked me if I was willing to learn more, and I took it as a challenge. So that motivated me to keep learning. And then came John, our boss who was very supportive and
motivated me to go to school. But not just me- everyone at the company. They always tell us that if we want to go to school, they can sign us up.
Rosbin: My brother worked here, and he trained me in the vineyard. John has mentored me in education, he has sent me to trainings on how to be a good leader, the truth is that I have always admired him for that. He has given me the opportunity to advance.

​What is one word that describes you?

Sergio: Humble, responsible, and honest.
Willson: Positive
Rosbin: I love to joke around, but I’m also respectful towards others. I don’t like when something feels off, I always try to problem solve.

What’s your philosophy in life?

Sergio: Responsibility, honesty, and having good values and dedication.
Willson: I always say that whatever I do, there will always be something positive, even if things don't
work out, something good has to come out of it.
Rosbin: My focus is my family and my work. My work is what gives me the means to support my family, my family is my engine to keep fighting day by day and to be an example for my children.

What classes have you taken with the Farmworker Foundation? Would you encourage others to take classes?

Sergio: I have gone to the leadership conference and the classes on soil and land, diseases, irrigation, and financial education. I would encourage everyone, you learn about work and performance, and you gain more
knowledge.
Willson: I have taken the English and technology classes, and the leadership class.
​Rosbin: I have taken the English classes and many trainings on sexual harassment, John gives us the
opportunity to the whole group so we can come back and share our experiences.

What advice would you give to others who want to be successful in the vineyard?

Willson: Wanting to learn. It is one thing to want to learn and another to learn how to do the job well. It is a process that goes from pruning to harvest, to be successful you need to do the job well. Discipline and perseverance are key.
Sergio: We must pay attention and let ourselves be guided. Sometimes it is very difficult to receive orders, but we must understand that if we want to be successful in life, we have to start at the bottom, and then when you are at the top, don't forget where you came from and who you are.

Spanish Interview

Háblenme un poco de ustedes. ¿Cuáles son sus nombres y sus puestos de trabajo?

Willson: Somos originarios de San José La Máquina, Departamento de Suchitepéquez en Guatemala.
Sergio: Mis labores aquí en el viñedo son varias, a veces me toca inyectar, deshierbar, podar, todo
lo que es deshojar.
Willson: Mi trabajo principal es encargarme del riego de las plantas y estar pendiente del spray.
Rosbin: Mi trabajo principal es estar al pendiente general del viñedo, el sistema de riego, la cosecha
y asegurarme de que todo salga bien y que no ocurran accidentes.

​¿Cuánto tiempo llevan haciendo este trabajo?

Sergio: Llevo cuatro años trabajando en el viñedo, toda la vida he trabajado en el campo.
Willson: Desde el 2008, desde el 2014 he estado trabajando para esta compañía.
Rosbin: Desde el 2019 he trabajado aquí.

¿Qué es lo que más les gusta del trabajo? ¿Qué es lo más difícil del trabajo?

Sergio: La verdad que me gusta todo lo que es de la viña, disfruto el tiempo de la poda. Lo más difícil, aparte de las temperaturas, es cuando estamos deshojando.
​Willson: Lo que me más gusta es que diario aprendo varias cosas, me gusta aprender mucho. Disfruto porque la mayoría aquí somos familia, así que todos los días que vengo nos podemos ver cosa que es difícil cuando uno trabaja en diferentes lados.
Rosbin: El tiempo de la cosecha es divertido, pisqué durante cinco años y me encantaba. Ahora no pisco, pero ver a los muchachos trabajar tan rápido, igual lo que no me gusta es que cuando están las alta temperaturas que es el tiempo de la soca, del deshoje, por lo mismo, si no por el calor, es la temporada que a veces siento que se me dificulta.

¿Qué habilidades se requieren para hacer bien el trabajo?

Sergio: Ser paciente e igual tratar de hacer lo mejor en el trabajo. Incluso, se necesita rapidez y ser efectivo.
Willson: La habilidad más grande que uno necesita es querer aprender y seguir instrucciones, porque si queremos hacer las cosas a nuestra manera después de que alguien ya nos explicó, puede que cometamos un error. Por ejemplo, en el spray, no puedo poner más ni menos porque si se enferman las plantas voy a tener un problema grave.
Rosbin: Venir al día a día, en el viñedo nunca deja de aprender uno. Año con año son cosas diferentes y distintas, siempre tenemos que estar con la mente abierta.

¿Cuál es su temporada favorita en los viñedos?

Sergio: Para mí la temporada más bonita es la pisca. Se siente una adrenalina cuando uno anda
piscando.
Willson: La cosecha es la mejor temporada, porque ahí miramos el fruto de todo el trabajo que hemos hecho desde la soca hasta la cosecha y pues si me emociona mucho.
Rosbin: La cosecha igual, es donde uno ve el esfuerzo si no lo hiciste bien o en que fallamos, por que anteriormente un rancho dio cierta cantidad, etc.

¿Han tenido o tienen un mentor en el trabajo? Háblenos de ellos.

Sergio: Cuando yo vine a este país y empecé en el viñedo, ellos dos, mis hermanos estuvieron conmigo explicándome porque para mí era nuevo, pero aprendí y ahora no digo que sé todo, pero se casi todo del viñedo.
Willson: Trabajé con un compañero, Andy Blanco y él ayudó mucho porque cuando yo empecé a trabajar con el riego, me enseño las instrucciones. Y me preguntó si era capaz de aprender algo más y eso fue un reto para mí. Pues eso me motivó para seguir aprendiendo. Y después vino John,
nuestro jefe que me apoyó mucho y me motivó hasta para ir a la escuela, a todos en la compañía, ellos siempre nos dicen que si queremos ir a la escuela ellos pueden inscribirnos.
​Rosbin: Igual, trabajó mi hermano aquí y el me orientó en lo que es el viñedo. John me ha orientado
en la educación, me ha mando a capacitaciones de cómo ser un buen líder, la verdad siempre he
admirado eso de él. Él me ha dado la oportunidad de avanzar.

¿Qué palabra les describe?

Sergio: Humildad, responsabilidad y honradez
Willson: Positivismo
Rosbin: Me encanta bromear, pero también soy respetuoso, no me gusta cuando hay algo que siento que no va, me gusta tratar de solucionar cosas.

¿Cuál es su filosofía de vida?

Sergio: La responsabilidad, la honestidad y también tener buenos valores y la dedicación.
Willson: Siempre digo que de todo lo que yo haga, siempre va a ver algo positivo, aunque no me funcionen las cosas yo tengo que sacar algo de allí.
Rosbin: Mi enfoque son mi familia y mi trabajo. El trabajo es lo que me da para sostener a mi familia, mi familia es mi motor para yo seguir luchando día a día y ser ejemplo para mis hijos.

¿Qué clases ha tomado con la Fundación de Trabajadores del Campo? ¿Animaría a otros a tomar clases?

​Sergio: He ido a la conferenciad de Liderazgo y las clases de suelo y tierra, enfermades, riego, educación financiera.
Willson: He tomado las clases de inglés y de computación, la clase de liderazgo
Rosbin: He tomado las clases de inglés, muchas capacitaciones sobre el acoso sexual, gracias a Dios, John nos da la oportunidad a todo el grupo y venimos y les comentamos la experiencia
Sergio: si la verdad que sí, aprendes sobre el trabajo y el desempeño y agarras más conocimiento.

¿Qué consejos les daría a otros que quieren tener existo trabajando en los viñedos?

Willson: Que quieran aprender. Una cosa es querer aprender y otra es aprender bien a hacer el trabajo. Es un proceso que se lleva desde la poda hasta la cosecha, para tener éxito hay que hacer el trabajo bien. Disciplina y constancia.
Sergio: Que captemos y que nos dejemos guiar. A veces es bien difícil recibir órdenes y entonces uno tiene que captar, si no quiere ser éxito en la vida tiene que esta abajo y después ya q estar arriba no olvidarte de donde saliste y quién eres.
