FWF: Tell me a little bit about yourself. What is your name and position at work? Where are you from originally?
Fernando: My name is Fernando Diaz Rodriguez and I’m the Vineyard Manager at Paradigm Winery. I started working in the vineyards 31 years ago.


FWF: What do you like best about the work? What is hard about the work?
Fernando: What I like the most is pruning because it is the base where it all starts. I like to explore the vines and see how strong they are for harvest.  The most difficult thing would be picking because we are the busiest.


FWF: What skills are required to do your job well?
Fernando: Be punctual, consistent and do your best

FWF: This is the time of year where the work you have done throughout the year comes together. Tell us what you're seeing in the vineyard this harvest. Is there something new that you have learned this year to improve your results?
Fernando: This year was interesting; we had a lot of heat that we usually don't have. The fruit ripened faster than usual. We have very good quality. It is a very good year.

FWF: Did you have, or have you ever had a mentor at work? Tell us about them.
Fernando:  My previous supervisor shared with me what he knew, his name is John Silva and he really taught me a lot. My current employer has also given me the opportunity to grow.

FWF: What is one word that describes you?
Fernando: Very diligent and I always like a challenge.​


FWF: Hobbies or personal interests?
Fernando: My kids, spending time with my son who plays football and traveling to Mexico.

FWF: What’s your philosophy in life?
Fernando: Be positive and keep learning because we never stop learning. We need to keep an open mind.


FWF: What classes have you taken with the Farmworker Foundation? Would you encourage others to take classes?
Fernando: I have attended the workshops and I have really been able to learn a lot. The truth is that we are given a lot of support.

FWF: What advice would you give to others who want to be successful in the vineyard?
Fernando: I would tell them that we can all do it, provided the strength, attention to detail, and the desire to learn.
The work is beautiful and sometimes one thinks that not everyone can do it. You just have to be mentally prepared and familiar with the field of viticulture.

FWF: Hábleme un poco de usted. ¿Cómo se llama y cuál es su puesto en el trabajo? ¿De dónde es originalmente?  
Fernando: Mi nombre es Fernando Díaz Rodríguez, soy el Vineyard Manager de Paradigm Winery y soy originario de Indaparapeo, Michoacán. Tengo 31 años trabajando en los viñedos. 

​FWF: ¿Qué es lo que más le gusta del trabajo? ¿Qué es lo más difícil del trabajo?
Fernando: Lo que más me gusta es la poda por es la base donde comienza todo. Me gusta explorar las plantas y ver que fuerza tienen para la cosecha. 
Lo más difícil sería un poco más la pisca porque estamos más ocupados. 

​FWF: ¿Qué habilidades se requieren para hacer bien el trabajo?
Fernando:  Ser más que nada puntual, constante y poner el mejor empeño

​FWF: Este es el tiempo del año en el que el trabajo que ha hecho durante todo el año rinde frutos. cuéntanos lo que estás viendo en el viñedo esta cosecha. ¿Hay algo nuevo que haya aprendido este año para mejorar sus resultados?
Fernando: Este año estuvo interesante, tuvimos mucho calor que usualmente no teníamos. La fruta se maduró más rápido de lo normal y de la calidad, tenemos muy buena calidad. Es muy buen año.

​FWF: ¿Ha tenido o tiene un mentor en el trabajo? Háblenos de ellos.
Fernando: Mi supervisor anterior me enseñó lo que el sabia, su nombre es John Silva. Me enseñó en realidad mucho, aprendi mucho de él y también mi patrón me dio la oportunidad de ir creciendo. 

FWF: ¿Qué palabra le describe?
Fernando: Muy cumplidor y siempre me gustan los retos. 

​FWF: Pasatiempos o intereses personales?
Fernando:  Mis hijos,  pasar tiempo con mi hijo que juega fútbol americano y viajar a México.

FWF: ¿Cuál es su filosofía de vida?
Fernando:  Ser positivo y seguir aprendiendo porque nunca paramos de aprender. Debemos tener nuestra mente abierta. 

FWF: ¿Qué clases ha tomado con la Fundación de Trabajadores del Campo? ¿Animaría a otros a tomar clases?
Fernando:  He asistido a los seminarios y realmente he podido aprender mucho y la verdad si nos orientan mucho. 

FWF: ¿Qué consejos les daría a otros que quieren tener existo trabajando en los viñedos?
Fernando: Les diría que en realidad todos podemos hacerlo, siempre la fuerza y la atención a todo y las ganas de aprender. ​El trabajo es bonito y a veces personas piensas que no todas las personas lo pueden hacer. Solo hay que mentalizarse y familiarizarse con el campo de la viticultura.
